Droughts have a direct effect upon plants, they are the source of nutrients and water for many animals. A drought not only dries out plants but also reduces a it's nutrient quality since they are lacking water. Therefore, some animals, like white-tailed deer who eat the plants, will loose weight and not put on the fat they need to help them get through winter.
Herbivores (organisms that consume plants) will wander to find water which will often be near human sources, or they will drink other substances that could potentially kill them to help satisfy their thirst. Since the plants are dying so will the herbivores, and the carnivores will have no meat to eat as well.
During a drought the land gets drier making it more vulnerable to having a forest fire. When these forests get destroyed, so do the habitats of the animals in the air and on the ground. It can also kill the animals because of the heat or they get trapped.
